The client is a large recruitment house operating in South Africa and the United Kingdom. Its candidate database holds over 5 million people, and new candidates are added all the time. Hiring companies log into the client's portal and submit a job spec for the role they need to fill.

The Problem

A database of 5 million candidates is a major asset, but only if recruiters can find the right people in it. Searching by keyword brings back long lists of loosely related profiles, and it can't tell relevant experience from irrelevant experience. A recruiter then has to read through those profiles one by one to build a shortlist.

That limited how many roles each recruiter could work on, and it meant strong candidates could be missed simply because their CV didn't use the expected words.

Our Solution

Elucidate built a candidate matching engine that reads a job spec the way an experienced recruiter would.

  • Instant shortlists. When a client submits a job spec, the engine scans all 5 million candidates and returns the best matches within a couple of seconds, as a ranked and scored list.
  • Reasons, not just scores. Each candidate comes with the detail behind their ranking: which requirements they meet, which they don't, and why. For a developer role, that means checking whether the candidate is full stack, which languages they know and how much of their experience is actually relevant to the role.
  • Searchable talent pool. Every candidate profile is vectorised, so the whole database can be searched by meaning rather than keywords. Clients can pay an additional fee to search it themselves, with queries like "developers with more than five years of PHP experience in the retail industry".

The Results

  1. Recruiters are four times more efficient, working through four times as many listings in the same period
  2. Shortlists for any job spec in a couple of seconds, with a justification for every candidate
  3. A new paid search product built on the client's existing candidate database
